Things That Didn’t Exist the Last Time ESPN’s Gameday Was in Lubbock
It's been 17 years since the last time ESPN's College GameDay was in Lubbock, and since then, quite a lot has changed in the Hub City. From new buildings to major improvements, we look quite a bit different from 2008, but here's hoping we perform like we did way back then (that is, we win the game and don't set any scooters on fire).
A Cultural Icon Is Born
In my opinion, the biggest change and improvement to Lubbock is the construction and opening of Buddy Holly Hall (1300 Mac Davis Ln.). This cultural gemstone officially opened in 2021, not only changing the skyline in the arts district, but also bringing in a massive amount of concerts, musicals, and other events that Lubbock would have likely missed out on otherwise. The building itself is gorgeous, and I hope the GameDay folks get a chance to tour it.

Texas Tech Changes
GameDay will be filmed on the Texas Tech campus, which has had several major changes since 2008. Quite a few large and lovely sculptures have been installed on campus, like Astrolabe and All the World is a Stage. There are many new buildings on campus, including the Burkhart Center for Autism, the new Rawls College of Business building, Talkington Hall, Innovation Hub, the John Walker Soccer Complex, and the Academic Science building.

City Improvements
Although it's a little too cool and they may be a little too big for it, splash pads were installed in Lubbock in 2024. The Marsha Sharp as we know it had its final widening in 2018, and construction has begun on Loop 88. I am choosing not to discuss 19th Street here. Yikes.
Restaurants and Retail Galore
There are far too many new businesses in Lubbock to mention, but perhaps they could try Ponto Gaucho (5107 82nd Street), which is housed in that relatively new and huge building on 82nd. Or most anything on 114th street and beyond. They could stay in one of the many new hotels, including the Cotton Court across from Tech.
Lubbock has grown tremendously since GameDay was last here, both in population, geography, and most importantly- culturally. We have made major strides towards supporting the arts, world cuisine, and academics, and as a lifelong Lubbockite, I'm quite proud of that.
