Recent Lubbock Golf Cart Death Highlights Need for Stronger Safety Precautions
A recent fatal golf cart accident in Lubbock is raising new concerns about safety, enforcement, and awareness when it comes to low-speed vehicles on public roads.
Let me be clear: I am in no way passing judgment on folks who use golf carts or other similar vehicles. I've done my fair share of tearing around my grandfather's farm on an ATV. However, we can all stand to be safer and more aware when tragedies like this are preventable. I am so very sorry for this family's loss.

What Happened in the Lubbock Golf Cart Incident
According to local reports, an 18-year-old passenger died after falling from a moving golf cart in central Lubbock. The incident occurred near 2nd Street and Avenue K when the cart was turning, and the passenger fell out, suffering serious injuries.
He was transported to the hospital but later died from those injuries a few days after the crash. Police indicated that the driver and another passenger were not injured, and the crash remains under investigation.
Why Golf Cart Accidents Are More Dangerous Than They Seem
Golf carts are often seen as harmless, especially in neighborhoods or near campuses, but they lack many of the safety features found in standard vehicles. In fact, approximately 15,000 to 18,000 people are treated in U.S. emergency rooms each year for injuries related to golf carts.
Unlike cars, most golf carts do not include:
- Seat belts
- Doors or protective framing
- Airbags or crash protection

Gaps in Awareness and Regulation
In Texas, golf cart laws vary depending on where and how the vehicle is used. While they are allowed in certain areas, especially on roads with lower speed limits, enforcement and awareness can be inconsistent.
Many riders may not realize:
- Passengers can be seriously injured without restraints
- Turning or uneven roads increase ejection risk
- Nighttime visibility is often limited without proper equipment
The Role of Passenger Behavior
Passenger actions can also play a major role in safety. Standing, riding on the edge, or failing to hold on properly can increase the risk of falling from the vehicle. Even when the driver is operating the cart responsibly, unsecured passengers remain vulnerable. We do not have the details on the aforementioned incident, so we do not yet know who is "at fault" if anyone even is.
This recent death is a reminder that “low-speed” does not mean “low-risk.” Without proper precautions, golf carts can be just as dangerous as any other vehicle on the road. Greater awareness and simple safety measures could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
