When Sprinkles opened in Lubbock a little over a year ago (November 2023), it came as a bit of a surprise to me.

That Sprinkles? The celebrity-endorsed, social media viral cupcake bakery chain? The cupcake place with a 24-hour ATM?

How does a chain go from densely populated, touristy, and posh cities like Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, and Chicago and then...Lubbock? It seemed like a giant leap.

Perhaps our reputation as "foodies" preceded us- we have many restaurants per capita and tend to flock to anything shiny and new. So Sprinkles took a gamble on us, one that seems to have unfortunately not paid off.

Sprinkles announced on Facebook that their ATMs are already offline and that the retail store, located at 8004 Quaker Avenue will close soon. If you have a gift card, you'll want to use it before you lose it.

The last day is Saturday, January 11th. Lubbock fans of Sprinkles expressed sadness at the news in the comments:

So sad to hear! Your cupcakes are so good!!!

This is very sad to hear! We love the cupcakes.

Another person inquired about the store selling equipment. Sprinkles responded that they have an industrial mixer and cupcake pans available for purchase.

The closure of Sprinkles comes closely after the closing of another bakery in Lubbock. Simply Decadent Bakery closed its current location permanently at the end of the holiday season but has hinted they may return elsewhere.

Lubbock is a highly competitive market for the food business, so even high-quality, unique, and interesting businesses still need a lot of luck to make it past those first few years.

Here's hoping our other existing bakeries can weather January resolutions and thrive in 2025.
