I have never met a single person who "liked" the STAAR test (or any of its similar predecessors) here in Texas.

I remember being in the public school system as we reviewed for TAAKS. Those times were the most soul-crushingly boring moments of my life. If I were lucky, I could at least stare out the window or get away with drawing on my shoes.

Beyond being boring, it's also stressful, and I don't believe it's made a single person any smarter. I remember whole "lessons" on how to shade in the bubbles.

Will Texas Finally Kill Off The STAAR Test?

It appears very likely that the STAAR test will be eliminated, although it is currently unclear if the legislature can get this process wrapped up before this session closes.

According to KERA News, the Senate has passed HB4, but it needs to head back over to the House for final approval before Governor Greg Abbott can sign off on it, if he chooses to do so.

What's Next For Standardized Testing In Texas?

If STAAR is eliminated, it will be replaced by three shorter tests spread out over the school year. These tests would also have a quick grading turnaround time, allowing teachers to make adjustments to the curriculum in a more timely manner.

I think this is a vast improvement, as it takes the tremendous pressure of one giant test off kids and teachers. The ability to pivot based on results, rather than needlessly hammering over the same things, might help kids stay more engaged.

What Are The Other Implications Of HB4?

It would also change how the Texas Education Agency "grades" schools.

The bill would require the TEA to release school ratings every year, update the accountability system at least once every five years and get legislative approval for major changes to how schools are graded.

This is in response to legal battles fought by public ISDs to prevent the release of these "grades," which are largely based on STAAR test scores.

Some ISDs argued that the grading system underwent changes without enough notice, which made the schools appear worse, and could allow for takeovers by the State.

Here's hoping that if these new tests get implemented that the change allows for more joy and actual learning in Texas classrooms.

When I look back on my education in Texas, I remember vast amounts of my precious time spent learning things that never helped me in real life- particularly how to take a standardized test. Instead of wasting our children's time, what should be taught in Texas schools?
