The Future Of Housing May Be Happening Now In Georgetown, Texas
Has Texas just perfected a new way to build houses?
Housing
I can only speak for my area, but there sure seems to be a lack of affordable housing in Texas. As someone with a family member shopping for a house it seems like houses are selling immediately after the the "For Sale" sign goes up. It can be a little frustrating for a potential home buyer. It also seems like homebuilders can't keep with the demand for new homes either.
The Neighborhood
Georgetown, Texas is the home for a subdivision called "Wolf Ranch", a neighborhood that features 100 3D printed homes. Now before you start questioning the quality of these homes, the "printer" uses a concrete mixture making these homes tougher than dirt. Just imagine having concrete walls and how they could stand up to weather, pests, rote and so much more.
The Build
Of course parts of the houses are before and after, but this "printer" knocks out a new house about every three weeks. Different designs are used to keep the houses from having a "cookie-cutter" look about them. The houses run between $450,000-$600,000. That may seem a little high, but that may have a lot to do with the facts that their just 30 miles outside of Austin.
Why 3D?
There are other "upsides" to these 3D printed houses including the more versatile material, less waste, and less manpower needed. All of this could translate to savings for customers in the long run. It will be very interesting to see if they can kick these houses out for less than the half-million dollar price range they're going for in Georgetown.
