Texas UPS Driver Passes Out While Driving Due to No A/C In Trucks
UPS has been taking some heat for conditions their drivers face after one driver allegedly passed out and crashed his truck into a tree due to soaring temperatures.
Apparently, the driver even called in to report that he was experiencing heat exhaustion symptoms but was told to drive his truck back anyway. Now, union representatives are demanding answers.
Luckily the driver was released from the hospital and is reported to be on the mend, however, things could have been much more dangerous for him and other people on the road.
Teamsters Local 767 didn't mince words about the incident on their social media:
The company continues to place packages over people. This is the third incident in the McKinney building alone. Do not trust the company to do the right thing for your health and safety.
The video caught by onlooker Henry Huynh is harrowing, it shows the truck nearly hit another car.
“When he swerved, he went over the grass median and went onto oncoming traffic,” said Huynh to NBC 5. “And then all of a sudden boom, he hits the tree.”
All UPS trucks purchased after January 1, 2024, have air conditioning, but the older trucks do not.
Some folks on r/Texas shared their experiences with the heat in older trucks:
My regular UPS driver has been out for a week due to heatstroke
My son has been driving for UPS for several years and he's had heatstroke twice. It's brutally hot in that truck with no AC.
The warehouse is bad too, I almost passed out due to the heat & yes it’s even worse with these trucks. Their promises are half assed in my hub. I hope the driver is okay.
Our ups driver died last year due to heat stroke Princeton
Just this week a 37 yr. old [UPS] driver died from heat exhaustion
Texas didn't become 100+ temps in the summer state overnight, so it is difficult to understand why UPS hasn't resolved this issue previously.
This was UPS' response to the incident:
We are aware of an incident involving our driver in McKinney, TX. We care deeply about his safety and well-being. We are working with authorities to investigate and defer to them for questions.
