Will NFL Rule Force Another Texas Tech Tradition To Die?
It has not been a good week for the Red Raiders
This Past Week
Texas Tech Football had a very rough week culminating in a humiliating loss to Baylor. Tech had two weeks to prepare for a team that was coming off of two loses. The game was at home. Tech was on a winning streak. The coach was being considered for awards. Then, all of sudden, the wheels didn't just come flying off, they looked like they weren't put on in the first place. To top it off, the home crowd left very early.
The Symbol
So what could be more insulting than any of this? How about if the NFL decides that one of your trademarks is a no-go in today's league. It could be an all-out ban, or just put a chill on something that is so recognizably Texas Tech. Just think about it, if I asked what the "symbol" of Tech support is, even a newbie would answer immediate: The Guns Up.
What Is Happening
The NFL has declared a ban on "violent gestures" and "finger guns" are specifically included. To be fair, the Texas Tech "Guns Up" is usually a finger pointed skyward, but who is going to take the chance on throwing up a Red Raider hand signal when there are fines and penalties involved? Some of you may think it's ridiculous that this is even being mentioned, but the NFL already hit eight players with violations for "threatening gestures" as of October 15th.
Your Opinion Doesn't Matter
You might think that there will be some kind of exception for the "Guns Up" to which I'd say, "Don't Count On It". Hand gestures are a weird-ish tradition around here, while most of America doesn't use or care about them. Meaning, there won't be a lot of support for what we consider tradition.
