Fun Facts About Baby Peacocks

- Baby peacocks are actually called "peachicks," which is nothing short of adorable. Unless, of course, you botch the spelling. In that case, it's...well...gross.

- Peachicks look identical when they are born, whether male or female. The fluffy, striped, brown down feathers make them look nearly the same as baby pheasants.

- Peachicks are born ready to go. They hatch with feathers and are ready to walk, forage, and follow their mom around all over the place, almost immediately. It's known as being precocial, which means they are relatively mature right after they hatch.

- Peachicks weigh around 3.6 ounces when they hatch, which is pretty hefty for a chick. They are much heavier than ducklings and typical pheasant chicks, and are about 4.7 inches tall, straight out of the gate.

 - Unfortunately, peachicks have a high mortality rate and are very vulnerable to predators. Only about 2 peachicks out of 6 in the wild will survive to maturity. (I bet their odds are better out at Spirit Ranch! They've got the gift of human friends around to step in and help out!)
