At best this is some guys trying to make a buck selling upgrades you don't need, at worst it's criminals messing with your alarm system.  At 4:30 we had two guys come by out house.  One was Caucasian and one was Hispanic.  The drove a newer blue car with no signs on the sides. The guys had logoed Golf Shirts and cards with lanyards are their neck.  The cards claimed that they were with "G.E.".  More after the jump.

The guys claim that your alarm isn't up to date with city ordinances and they want to upgrade your control panel for free.  Now, if I'm correct, after your panel was installed there would be some kind of unexpected charge or something of that nature.

Here's where I blew my top.  I walked up on these guys trying to pull this and asked bluntly: 'are you with my alarm company>" and they once again they stated they were with the company that makes the alarms.  I repeated my question and they repeated the same answer.  I then told them "then get the f@ck out" (they had stepped into the foyer).  Now, what REALLY made me made is the guy not immediately leaving but offering to explain this "city ordinance" to me again.  I told him again to "get the f@ck out" and that I was calling the cops to see what they thought of the stuff they were pulling.  At that point they left the neighborhood (I know this because I went to track 'em down so I could give the cops their location).

Like I said, at best these are guys that are door to door salesmen that are not being 100% honest about who they are working for, at worst they are criminals eyeballing your alarm system.  I contacted my alarm company and these germs were not licensed to work on my system (and my system is perfectly fine).

Keep in mind that your alarm company would call you if you really needed an upgrade.  They would be the FIRST people to sell you an upgrade because they know you already have a version of their equipment.  Now if these knuckleheads come by your house, grab their license plate number and give it to the police, they seemed very interested in checking these guys out.
