Lubbock ranks average on fast food options, so why the lack of choices?

As much as Lubbock loves to eat out, it’s surprising that more fast-food chains here don’t seem to thrive. You’d think a city with such a strong appetite for dining would be a magnet for new options. It’s always eye-opening to visit another town and see what appears to be a wider variety of choices, while in Lubbock, many places just don’t stick around long enough to become regulars.

Wallethub’s Numbers Show Lubbock Isn’t Too Pricey

Now, let’s be clear—it isn’t that the cost of fast food is driving people away. Prices in Lubbock are pretty average. In fact, a Wallethub study ranked the Hub City #49 out of 100 on its list of “Cities Where People Spend the Most/Least on Fast Food.” That puts us smack in the middle of the scale, meaning our burgers, fries, tacos, and pizzas aren’t especially pricey compared to other places.

Wallethub used a convincing methodology, comparing the cost of fast food to the median income in each city. By that measure, we’re not splurging, but we’re not scraping by either when it comes to the cost of drive-thru dining.

Of course, “average” doesn’t always mean “affordable.” Some folks may still feel the pinch. But the bigger issue isn’t the cost—it’s variety. Lubbock has die-hard favorites that locals cling to, but it would be nice to see more chains survive long enough to give residents and visitors fresh options.
