Shocker

I'm not sure how I missed the news, but it looks like the entertainment landscape in Lubbock is about to change drastically. I was stunned to see on social media that the last day for movies at Cinemark Movies 16 was Sunday. While there is no one to call to confirm this news, you could not buy tickets for any movies at that location after Sunday evening.

It's A Big Loss

Losing one more entertainment option in Lubbock is heartbreaking. One could guess that it's a lack of exciting product, or actually too many theaters in relation to the population, as the reason for the closure. When the 16 opened, there was no Tinseltown (from the same company), Alamo, or Premiere Cinemas. In addition, there's about to be a combo movie theater/bowling place opening in Covenant Park. It certainly would make sense for Cinemark to focus on making one location successful.

What's Next?

There's another question: if this is truly the end of theaters in that location, then what will take that spot? The entire area hasn't seemed right to me since Best Buy left the nearby corner. Also, the lack of a movie theater in that location could be very impactful to nearby businesses, as that area of town is a bit isolated.

History

For now at least, it looks like the Cinemark Movies 16 will join Showplace 6, The Winchester, and many others in a long line of movie theaters we've had to say goodbye to. I just happened to be nearby when the first wrecking ball hit the Winchester, and trust me, it's a very sad memory. It will be a sad day if Movies 16 is razed after so many people grew up watching movies there. Just for the record, the theater opened on September 7th, 1990, so I guess 35 years is a pretty good run.
