More than one month later, Lubbock police continue to ask for the public's help in figuring out what led to the death of 47-year-old John David Wishert.

The incident happened the night of Friday, April 16th, 2021. Lubbock police officers responded to the 3000 block of University Avenue at around 10:15 p.m. and found Wishert lying in the roadway. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

It's been determined that Wishert wasn't struck by a vehicle, but that's the only detail that's been confirmed concerning his death.

At the time of his death, Wishert was serving parole following a 5-year prison sentenced after he was convicted on an arson charge back in 2016.

Before that, Wishert had spent around 20 years in prison for murder. He pleaded guilty to the charge in May 1996 to the shooting death of Joe Henry Jimenez. It's reported, however, that Wishert, who was 19 years old at the time, pleaded guilty out of fear based on his age.

Wishert's sister, Allison Velasquez, said that despite his previous convictions, he was a loyal family man with two children. She told police that she doesn't understand why he would've been found dead in the street less than a block from where he lived.

Any information regarding Wishert's activities prior to his death can be called into Crime Line at 806-741-1000. Callers can remain anonymous, and information leading to an arrest may be eligible for a reward.
