You Were Right-Lubbock Has The Highest Electric Rate In Texas
Lubbock, Texas is not going to be happy about this.
Lubbock Promises Were Broken
It wasn't that long ago that Lubbock went through deregulation and we joined the Texas Electrical Grid. What was promised was that the competition for our energy dollar would bring rates down and provide more reliable service. What we got was two bills, and when they were combined, gave Lubbock real sticker shock and "buyers remorse".
Lubbock Residents Know They're Paying More
Everything you've been thinking about this eclectic transition is true. Lubbock was just named "The Least Affordable Energy City" by The Home Energy Club. This comes from an average electricity rate of 17.2 (¢/kWh). On top of the highest kilowatt per hour charge, our wild temperature fluctuations mean we use a lot of energy as well. This results in the average electrical bill coming in at $242.49.

Lubbock Energy Is Very Pricey
It's worst than you think. Coming in at the second worst in Abilene/San Angelo who are at 16.19 and an average bill of $226.59 (You would think that the worst and second worst would be a little closer than that). As far as our distance from the #1 Most Energy Efficient City", it's a long, long ways away. Houston has a kilowatt rate of 14.10 and an average bill of $197.49. That's a monthly difference of $45.
Texas Energy Is Bad Overall
It was a mistake for Lubbock to join the ERCOT, which has it's own set of problems, but dissatisfaction with our local provider seemed to be at an all time high. As a result of this transition we've got higher rates, less stability, and in many cases, less access to help when situations arise. Locals felt like "punishing" our previous provider and ended up only punishing themselves.
