Well, this is a bit unexpected. You know those TV shows portraying the border areas as lawless badlands? It appears they are wrong. When it comes to murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, you are much more likely to be a victim in West Texas.

First and foremost, let's get Odessa out of the way.

Odessa makes number one of the list, and it seriously outpaces everyone with 806 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

Lubbock comes in no. two with 658 per 100,000. And before you folks in Amarillo point to us and snicker, you're no. one in reported cases of rape.

All of this information comes to light in the current issue of Texas Monthly, so hey, free publicity! It does fly in the face of what we all know and feel about Lubbock and Texas in general. I would think I absolutely, positively would have a better chance of being robbed in say, Austin, but no -- Austin is one of the places you're least likely to get robbed.

All of this information also flies in the face of the "defend our borders" types, because the Rio Grande Valley, which borders Texas and Mexico, comes in dead last, with only 240 incidents per 100,000 people.

Think about that for a second: the area politicians are building their campaigns on and are trying to convince you are a threat to Americans safety are way less than half as dangerous as good old Lubbock, Texas. (Maybe next election cycle someone will pledge to 'protect our families from the people of Lubbock?')

Look at it this way: at least we're not Corpus Christi. The town with the holy name is also the place you're most likely to get murdered.
