Unfortunately, Lubbock's iconic Pier 1 Imports is closing its doors for good, amidst bankruptcy and a national announcement that all Pier 1 Import stores will be closing.

A visit to our Lubbock store at 5015 Milwaukee, in the Canyon West Shopping Center showed no sign yet of a permanent close, although signage for their temporary closure due to COVID-19 was still posted on the front door.

A peek through the store's windows shows that everything is still in place.

This fantastic store has been around for so long it's hard to remember a time when it wasn't. They filed bankruptcy three months ago and closed almost half of their 1,000 stores across the country. They'd since been in search of a buyer, and their press statement sites COVID-19 as a significant factor in this unfortunate turn of events.

Pier 1 Imports started out in the 60s. Its flagship store was called Cargo and opened in San Mateo, California in 1962. They quickly grew to 16 stores and were off and running, opening their corporate headquarters in Fort Worth in 1966. By the time they went public in 1972, they had grown to 123 stores and had even opened stores internationally in Europe and Australia.

This incredibly popular chain really continued to take off in the 80s. In the 90s, Pier 1 grew in Japan. In 2008, their headquarters was sold, and, eventually, many other corporate changes unfolded for this powerhouse company.

It's definitely sad to see something we all grew up with struggle and fail. Times are changing that's for sure, and many of the big stores we've always known are facing tough times.

A look at Pier 1's website shows no sign yet of the news of their closing. They have online shopping and address COVID-19 concerns, with Memorial Day savings promoted throughout the site.

We hope to see them open their doors one last time for a closing sale and a final opportunity to visit our Lubbock Pier 1 Imports. It's very sad to lose this beautiful, longstanding landmark store.
