Did you know that Lubbock is home to a poet laureate? Are you not exactly sure what a poet laureate even is? Don't worry -- I love poetry, and I wasn't exactly sure.

A poet laureate "is a poet officially appointed by a government or conferring institution." Basically, it's a poet who is so accomplished and so loved that their community wants that poet to represent them:

William Wenthe is an American poet and professor whose poems have appeared in literary journals and magazines including Georgia Review, Southern Review, Callaloo, Tin House, Paris Review, Poetry, and in anthologies including Poets on Place (Utah State University Press, 2005). His honors include a Pushcart Prize and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Commission on the Arts. His most recent poetry collection is Words Before Dawn (Louisiana State University Press, 2013). He was named Lubbock’s Poet Laureate in 2017. He teaches at Texas Tech University and is the poetry editor for Iron Horse Literary Review.

Professor Wenthe will appear throughout Hub City Comic Con, on August 24th- 26th, 2018.
