Scorching Future: Could Texas Become Too Hot to Handle?
Springtime in Texas is beautiful. I swear, it's the best time to be outdoors in the Lone Star State. Sunshine paired with a cool breeze? Yes, please. It's the perfect weather to relax in a hammock with a good book. I only wish it would last longer...
Summer is looming right around the corner, dragging a suitcase full of scorching hot days and very little rain. I'm not looking forward to it at all, and it seems like every year gets worse than the one before. It makes me wonder what exactly the future holds.
Will Texas eventually be too hot for humans?
Unfortunately, scientists think we are heading in that direction.
Researchers at Penn State University discovered how resilient a healthy human is to extreme temperatures with an ultra-sweaty experiment in their lab. The study concluded we can continue to maintain a normal core body temperature at 95F with 100% humidity, OR 115F with 50% humidity. After that, things start to get all willy-nilly.
The study left everyone wondering when it was too hot to work in an environment without air conditioning. This is a HUGE problem for Texas because our most prominent industries, like oil and gas, require much of the work to be done outdoors.
Global warming is gradually cranking up the heat in Texas. It's very possible that eventually, it will become an unbearable place to live.
So, how long do we have? Do we need to pack up and leave NOW?
No, you don't need to pack your bags just yet. You and I will probably be long gone before it gets too bad...
The Environmental Protection Agency predicts that roughly 70 years from now, we will see 3 or 4 times as many days each year above 100F as we do now. This will very likely cause major problems for human health and the agriculture industry in Texas.
Our children and our children's children literally are going to sweat to death if we don't start taking things more seriously. Unfortunately, by the time we convince stubborn climate change deniers that there is INDEED a problem, it could already be too late.
