Thursday night, an officer with the Snyder Police Department shot and killed a man.

In a statement from Snyder’s Chief of Police, Brian Haggard, the officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Whitney Merket, a seven-year veteran of the Snyder Police Department.

The shooting occurred Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. after officers were called to the 3600 block of Jacksboro Avenue in Snyder, Texas.

The nature of the call has not been explained, but it’s reported that once police arrived, Officer Merket had an altercation with an unidentified man and shot him. He was later pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Norma Martinez, and his body was sent for an autopsy in Lubbock.

KAMC News reports that the Texas Rangers have been called to investigate the shooting, and Officer Merket has been placed on administrative leave.
