Texas Slashes Health Coverage for 1.7 Million—A Looming Crisis
1.7 million people in Texas were stripped of their healthcare coverage in a process meant to ensure that individuals on Medicaid truly met the qualifications.
This is a major problem. Think about it.
25 million people in the United States have been disenrolled from Medicaid and CHIP since the "unwinding" process began, and Texas has the highest enrollment in these assistance programs nationwide.
The most vulnerable people in our state are now at even greater risk. It will be reflected in the additional pressure on emergency services and hospitals across the state. We already have the highest rate of uninsured people in the country.
Texas is a ticking time bomb.
Let's dig in deeper...
The high rate of folks in Texas who were disenrolled has been directly linked to our state's strict eligibility requirements, arduous bureaucratic red tape, and an individual's failure or inability to renew necessary documents, which is often for reasons out of their control.
It is MUCH harder for a low-income individual in Texas to get assistance than you think. If you've never had to jump through the hoops of the system, count yourself lucky, and don't discount the struggle of those less fortunate than you out of sheer ignorance.
A shameful and disgusting "every man for himself" mentality has polluted our state in recent years. The effects are now rearing their ugly heads, and setting their gaze on the poor and defenseless.
Enough is enough.
Texans, please, please, educate yourself on this subject. Open your minds and hearts to your neighbors, friends, children, small business owners, store clerks, waitresses, construction workers, housekeepers, strangers in the street, and everyone in Texas whose livelihood is at stake.
Voice your opinions in a letter to Congress. Help your fellow man, down on his luck, and his children who are left no choice but to suffer the consequences. Be part of the solution.
We must change course before the most vulnerable among us are left to sink.
