This Saturday is "Tortilla Chip Day" and I thought, "How can I even begin to celebrate Tortilla Chip Day unless I have the proper salsa?

The Worst Salsa

I tend to stay out of the California/Texas rivalry because I was born in Compton, California, but have lived in Texas for about 40 years. I have a foot, and interest in both worlds. I went to a Michelin Star Mexican food restaurant and while the food was absolutely amazing, the salsa was hot-tomato juice-garbage. Goodsalsa has a richness to it, but other than that, I think what makes salsa great is in the mouth of the beholder.

Some Of The Best

I am far from an expert on this topic and I really haven't found much in Lubbock I didn't like. I would buy the salsa from Rosa's if it was available. Johnny G's, which started in Lubbock is five-star salsa. Abuelos has a green, I guess tomatillo-pineapple salsa that's amazing, but we should stick to talking about the traditional reds here. My friend Leonard makes an amazing salsa with avocado chunks in it, but Leonard only hooks up his closest friends.

A Surprising Choice

Most jars of salsa can sit in my fridge for a few weeks or more. They are perfectly serviceable and delicious, but there is only one that I consider craveable. When I say crave-able, I mean a jar that lasts less than a week. I truly believe the best salsa in Lubbock, Texas, that I know of, comes from Angela Hightower Income Tax Service. I'm not joking. Angela gifts clients and friends her salsa and I put that stuff away like it's a Big Gulp. Here's heartbreaking news for you too, you can't buy the salsa. You either get it as a gift, or you don't get it.  You can call me out on my choice all you want, but Angela's salsa is so good, that you'll be looking forward to tax time.
