The Newest Natural Landmark Is In The State Of Texas
Score one of the Lone Star State.
A Landmark Decision
The newest natural landmark is in the State of Texas. Think about that; the Statue Of Liberty and places like Gettysburg are designated national landmarks and we get to add another to our list. The landscape and history of Texas certainly has more than enough choices for the designation, but the latest honor goes to a place about two miles south of Midland-Odessa.
The New Designee
The Indian Creek Preserve is in the Chihuahuan desert about a mile north of the border with Mexico. The area features a natural waterway, canyons, and flattop mesas. The area covered is about 20 acres of natural Texas beauty. The area was said to be home to the Apache and even earlier indigenous people for over 12,000 years. The area, which is managed by the Nature Conservancy is now the 605th Natural Landmark.
Visit Texas
Texas has a number of Natural Landmarks that bear mentioning as well. The Alamo, The King Ranch, and several forts make the list of 50, now 51 places. Also on the list are the Governors Mansion, LBJ's Boyhood Home, and The Lubbock Lake Site.
It's Meaningful
Recognizing a place like the Indian Creek Preserve is incredibly important. Being one of the less regulated states, it's important that we protect some of our natural resources and beauty. This location makes perfect sense because it "looks like Texas". That idea may seem a little vague to outsiders, but it's pretty much what a mental picture of the the great outdoors in Texas looks like for those who live in the State.
