Hey, City of Lubbock -- aren't you kind of liable if you have a law you don't enforce? It seems like you should be. Each year my neighborhood looks like a scene from "Apocalypse Now" (see the video above) and nobody does anything about, nor do I want them to.

So, if everybody is going to do it anyway, why even change the law?

Well, it would be my hope that the city would legalize the fireworks within a certain time frame.

Right now, people think that they're breaking the law anyways so it doesn't really matter when. My hope would be that if we allowed fireworks from say 6 p.m. to midnight on the intended holidays, then we could get some enforcement on the other hours.

Like anyone else, I enjoy fireworks. I don't enjoy them for a full week at a time and neither do my dogs. Things started the minute the stands opened in my neighborhood, and the full-on assault started on July 3. This means that we all start having problems with pets the minute everyone else decides they need to celebrate. So, you don't care about pets? What about vets? There's more than a few veterans who just can't deal with the constant explosions.

A designated time frame may not work, but what we've got now is not working, not even a little bit. I think us fireworks lovers can come up with a fair compromise for everybody.
