A local woman was attacked by two pit bulls that got our of their yard. Sorry, it happens. Dogs get out, they get territorial and on occasion they get aggressive towards people. Notice that said "dogs," not "pit bulls." This can happen with any breed.

Now a local t.v. personality/general manager is calling for "higher standards" for pitbull owners. Let me start by saying what a load. On what sliding scale are we going to be judging dogs now? I've been bit once by a dog. It was a chihuahua. I've spoke to many friends who have been bitten by those psycho little freaks, too. (Calm down, one of MY dogs is half Chihuahua).

Does that mean that Chihuahua owners should face "higher standards"? No. This is just the latest attempt at pandering by a local TV station. It's a shallow attempt at getting the frightened old ladies that watch their news to say 'Yeah, we're with you local newsman!"

When I was a kid, I heard all of this same nonsense about Dobermans. Pit bulls are just a popular breed right now, so of course the more dogs in one breed, the more instances of problems reported by that breed.

Let me be clear: Any owner should face the consequences of their negligence. There are truly accidents, too. But an entire breed of dogs and an entire class of dog owners shouldn't be denigrated because there are some irresponsible people who just so happen to like this breed. We also shouldn't let one incident dictate how we treat all of these dogs and owners.

Don't let the news media hype you into believing otherwise.
