According to the FDA, Orgain has voluntarily recalled its product  30g Protein Organic Plant Based Powder - Chocolate 2.01lb, because it may contain traces of undeclared peanuts.

Peanut allergies can be very severe, and even fatal.

The powder was available in retail stores and available to order online.

The product comes in a 2.01lb plastic tub with a blue label indicating its chocolate flavor and has an expiration date of June 20, 2026. The product lot code is 4172-02-P.

No other Orgain products have been affected. Orgain has stated that they are participating in the recall, "out of an abundance of caution following a report of an allergic reaction from one consumer."

No other illnesses from this recall have been reported.

Are Protein Powders Safe?

Protein powders are generally very safe, even healthy when used in moderation. However, not every protein powder is created equal- be sure to read how much sugar, carbs, and artificial ingredients are in your powder before deciding what is right for you.

If you are lactose intolerant- you may want to avoid whey protein, which is a milk product, as it could cause you gastric distress.

Plant-based protein powders are made from a variety of seeds, legumes, and grains and usually in combination to create a "whole" protein. If you have any food allergies you will want to consult the ingredients carefully.
