According to the FDA, one person has died and at least 39 other people have been sickened due to an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. Coli) that has been linked to organic carrots.

While the carrots should no longer be on shelves, they could be in consumers' refrigerators, and therefore present a health hazard- both in the carrots themselves and any other food or surfaces they may have come into contact with.

The outbreak may have been caused by Grimmway Farms carrots, both whole and peeled "baby" carrot varieties, which are sold under many brand names and in many different sizes.

The brands associated with the recall include 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle. Good & Gather, GreenWise, Marketside, Nature's Promise, O-Organics, President's Choice, Raley's, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Wegmans, and Wholesome Pantry.

Most of the baby carrots subject to recall have Best If Used By Dates ranging from mid-September to early November. The bags of whole carrots do not have Best By dates.

All of these organic whole carrots were available for purchase at retail stores from August 14 through October 23, 2024. No best-if-used-by-dates are on the bags of organic whole carrots.

Root vegetables can have a long shelf life in the refrigerator, so I would personally err on the side of caution and toss any of these brands of carrots bought during that time range. Better safe than potentially very sick.

Consumers with these carrots are strongly encouraged to throw the carrots away and also clean and sanitize any surfaces they have touched. You should also throw away any other food they may have touched.

If you have any questions about this recall, you can contact the Grimmway customer services desk at 1-800-301-3101, M-F, 8 am – 8 pm ET, and November 16-17, 8 am – 8 pm ET, or visit www.grimmway.com.
