Alligators In Texas

You've heard of a Texan in alligator boots, but have you heard of a Texan in an alligator? The truth is it is way north of rare, but it has happened. Back in 2015, a man interrupted what Texas Monthly claimed was an 189-year streak by being killed by an alligator. The man was kind of asking for it by yelling "F... the alligators" and then jumping in the water with a clearly posted "No Swimming Alligators" sign close by. In other words, alligators would prefer to have no human interaction but don't insult them.

We Do Have The Numbers

The lack of death by alligators does not mean that you can't or won't have an alligator in Texas. Estimates say that there are up to a half-million alligators in Texas. Again, alligators tend to stick to the eastern portion of the state, but there are some in lakes up north. This is bothersome news for people from East Texas because they also have a Black Bear population on the rise.

How To Survive An Alligator Encounter

Don't ask me why, but "Business Insider" has a list of tips on how to survive an alligator coming at you and one of them is not, "politely hand them a business card". The big tip is "Run away as fast as you can in a straight line" (Thanks! That's what I was going to do anyway).  They also mention that playing dead doesn't work with alligators because apparently if you make them mad they prefer you that way.
