Lubbock Criminally Omitted From List Of Top 50 Rock Landmarks
I'm not really happy with this one.
Let's start with the fact that Ultimate Classic Rock is a sister site. It is very much written and published by people within our group of stations. With that said, I'm going to have to call H.R. on these people for their latest list.
The topic of the list was "50 Rock Landmarks That Every Fan Must Visit". Of course the list is populated with places like Graceland and the Grand Old Opry (for rock fans?), but some of the omissions are tragic, and that would include Lubbock, Texas, the home of the one and only, rock and roll innovator Buddy Holly.
Now what makes this especially insulting is that Buddy Holly is mentioned on the list. It's just that mention has nothing to do with his hometown or how we honor him. Included in the list of fifty is the Surf Ballroom, the site of his last concert (Somehow over time, Clear Lake has co-opted Buddy's legacy over this hometown and that's not right).
I can be as hard on Lubbock as the next guy. We are not a fantastic place to visit, we're just more on the "okay" side of things, still, you cannot say that our tributes to Buddy Holly shouldn't be in the top 50 of this list.
I really don't want to diminish any other places on the list because they probably all have value to someone, but c'mon, leaving the birthplace, stature, and museum for Buddy Holly really makes Lubbock a must-visit for any real fan of rock and roll. And believe me, if any of these people from Ultimate Classic Rock show up at the company Christmas party then I will educate them thoroughly.
