New Lubbock Park Plans Are Great, But Baffling
The city has finally unveiled a 20-year master plan for its parks.
I'm so pleased that Lubbock is investing in its parks. I do believe that these improvements should take place a little quicker than the next 20 years, but for now, we'll take it.
The short version is that a dozen new playgrounds and a dozen trails are included, along with the splash pads we've already heard about. I'm not so sure about investing in the Canyon Lakes, mostly because I think it benefits the people who live there much more than people who visit. Still, I can't complain too much about that.
What I find baffling is the inclusion of 16 pickleball courts at McAlister Park. I certainly understand that we have a bit of a fad happening right now, but isn't it a little early to bet on it? I'm sure those people into the sport think it will be around forever but so did the people who invested in fidget spinners.
It's just a thought, so settle down. The courts can easily be demolished or something else put in their place if the sport winds down. It just seems like more areas that are pet-inclusive, or even basketball courts might have been a safer bet.
I'm not anti-pickleball. As a matter of fact, I have no feelings about it whatsoever. I think I'd have a similar reaction if you told me we were going to have 16 climbing walls or 16 rugby fields; it just seems trendy and a bit odd. More parks with more stuff to do is still a win, no matter what is in them.
