Being a weather geek is fun right up until we start pushing the records for extreme temperatures. Be it super cold or super hot, this fair-weather gal prefers to avoid reaching, setting, and especially breaking heat records.

On Thursday, August 13th, the weather station at Lubbock International Airport recorded a high temperature of 107 degrees, which ties the record set in 1936.

Unfortunately, the heat will be sticking around at least during Friday and Saturday, with afternoon high temperatures expected to be above 100 degrees again.

The good news is that the upper-level high pressure which has brought these extreme temperatures to the South Plains will soon advect to a position that will favor the production of convective showers and thunderstorms beginning late Saturday.

Temperatures during the workweek, Aug. 17th-21st, will be much milder for this time of year, with the addition of lower-level moisture that will keep temperatures near seasonal averages in the lower to middle 90s. That's much better than sweltering triple-digit heat.
