Texas Ranks 48th In Safety, What’s Going On Here
The Lone Star State isn't looking so safe anymore.
I hate to break this to my fellow Texans, but living here just isn’t that safe right now. For years, we’ve told ourselves we’re the greatest state in the union — and in many ways, we are. But that pride may have blinded us a bit. The hard truth is that the numbers don’t lie, and they show a state slipping in some pretty alarming ways.
According to WalletHub’s 2025 Safest States in the U.S. report, Texas ranks 48th, landing near the bottom of the list. Only Mississippi and Louisiana fared worse, making this a “race to the bottom” we didn’t want to win.
Breaking Down the Numbers That Doom Texas
The study analyzed five key categories: Personal & Residential Safety, Financial Safety, Road Safety, Workplace Safety, and Emergency Preparedness. Each was made up of numerous data points, painting a detailed picture of how states protect their residents — or don’t. Here's some of the crime categories broke out that will make you cringe:
- 30th – Murders & Non-Negligent Manslaughters per Capita
- 31st – Assaults per Capita
- 32nd – Sex Offenders per Capita
When it comes to crime and safety, Texans aren’t faring well. In fact, Lubbock ranked as the 10th most dangerous city in the country, and that’s just when looking at crime. If you factored in financial, road, and emergency readiness metrics, the results could look even bleaker for West Texas.
No More Excuses For Crime In Texas
Some people will say this kind of ranking doesn’t matter — that “bad things only happen to bad people in bad places.” But that’s just denial. These numbers represent real people, real neighborhoods, and real families — the kind that make up Texas itself.
It’s time to stop brushing it off and start demanding better. We can’t keep claiming to be the best if we’re not willing to fix what’s broken. Our pride should drive improvement, not complacency.

And just to add a little irony to the mix — Texas recently sent National Guard troops to Illinois, which ranks a full twelve spots higher at #36 on the same list. Maybe it’s time we turned some of that focus back home.
