Here’s What Makes A Wedding A Texas Wedding
A new survey about weddings in Texas might be a bit of an eye-opener for some of you.
Now, I say this with love — I’m a wedding officiant. I’ve done dozens upon dozens of weddings, and I’m aiming for hundreds. I specialize in what I call “alternative” weddings. Don’t let that word scare you — it just means anything outside the traditional church ceremony or courthouse quickie. Basically, if it has personality, I’m in.
That’s why this caught my attention.
A group called Walter’s Wedding Estates — a high-end, all-inclusive collection of venues across Texas and Georgia — surveyed 1,000 Texans to find out what defines a “Texas wedding.”
And let me tell you… y’all are a lot less original than you think.
Here's The Top 3 Things To Expect At Texas Weddings
Coming in at #1, with 39% of the vote: serving barbecue or Tex-Mex.
Now don’t get me wrong — that’s elite-tier food. That’s happiness on a plate. But let’s not pretend you just reinvented weddings because you swapped chicken marsala for brisket.
At #2, pulling 27%: “Southern hospitality.”
Which sounds nice… until you realize that just means Aunt Linda is forcing hugs on strangers and someone’s grandma is judging your life choices from a folding chair.
Then we get to #3 — a tie between live country music and boots & western wear.
And buddy… this is where things go sideways.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen a bride and groom slap on cowboy hats like they just got cast in a low-budget rodeo reboot. Hats still have the tag tucked in, boots that have never seen dirt — it’s not “Texas,” it’s Halloween with a catering budget.
Look, I appreciate Walter’s for doing the research, I really do. But if your big, bold wedding idea is brisket, boots, and a Spotify country playlist…
You didn’t plan a unique Texas wedding.
You planned every Texas wedding.
And hey — that’s okay.
Just maybe… break in the hat first.
