When I was younger, there was a saying that whatever was popular on the coasts would reach Lubbock in about two years. And dang, if you couldn't count on it. Nowadays, we have the internet.

Lubbock is still a little slow on the uptake, but certainly not as slow as we were back in the day. It seems to me that I am seeing more and more people masking up, and more masking up properly, to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

I'm sure you can give me tons of examples of bad behavior and non-compliance; you can find those issues in any town. It just seems that more people are taking the coronavirus pandemic seriously.

Masking up is a lot like fashion: when a large portion of people do it, the rest tend to fall in line. I think we've started to reach a point where the people who may not even realize the benefits have started doing it because everybody else is.

We still have a long way to go, but this is a start. Every single person that does not get infected may mean a halt to some exponential growth.

Lastly, I would like to once again encourage you to have fun with it. Grab a cool bandana, or pick up a mask that reflects your personality. The rest of us don't even care if you get a face mask that says, "face masks don't work" on it. As long as you're masking up, you are making everyone a little safer.

Thanks for doing better, Lubbock. Let's clamp down and try to get this thing under control so we can get ready for tailgating, Halloween and the inevitable return of concerts.
